Welcome to The Study Room

Welcome to The Study Room

Who Are we?

If you’ve heard about The Study Room, you may have first wondered what it is. It’s a place to study (the name is pretty self-explanatory). However, it is the study of a specific thing.  Let me explain.  The Study Room is all about God, about striving to know and love Him more, to learn how to best live a life that is honouring to Him. Where do we find this information? God has given us His Spirit-breathed Word, the Bible, to inform us in all we need to know.

Paul tells us that: “16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).  Not only is the Scripture inspired by God, but we, as born-again believers, have the Holy Spirit working inside us to help us distinguish what is being taught. There are so many wonderful reasons to read God’s Word.

Why the Bible?

Why is the Bible emphasized so much in Christianity? King Solomon said that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7), and the Bible is the best place to learn about God. We are looking to know our God – that should be our main goal. To know Him more is to love Him more, which leads to a deeper relationship and which will flow out into how we live, our priorities, and where we find our joy. Why do we want and need to know God? Because He has made a way for us to be made right with Him. We need to know who God is because we have been separated from Him by sin, and He, through the blood of His Son, has made a way for that to be reconciled. God is shown from Genesis to Revelation, even when His name isn’t mentioned directly. He is revealing Himself to us, flawlessly, through the overarching storyline of Scripture. He is becoming known to us for our knowledge and joy. He didn’t have to do this, but He is a good God, and He enjoys having a relationship with His children.

The Bible is THE most important book. The Bible teaches that we should meditate on it, think about it and talk to Him about it, chew on it, and pray about it. “5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”  (Deuteronomy 6:5-9). The Bible is our lifeblood.  We should be in our Bibles or thinking about our Bibles and the God it speaks about more than anything else.

The Bible is not only for reading as a book, but also for wisdom in godliness. It is for studying so that it can be applied. Wisdom is knowledge applied. You can have knowledge, and still make poor decisions. You can make good decisions by chance. Or you can, “15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”  (2 Timothy 2:15). The more effort we make, the more we dig, the more we learn. True learning takes time. It isn’t a quick speed-read over a passage and you’ve somehow managed to use osmosis to take in all that’s being taught (though that would be pretty great). It takes time, other people, and resources to grasp – and to continue grasping – all the concepts and teachings that are being conveyed.

We struggle at times with the Bible. However, God hasn’t left us to try to figure everything out on our own. He has given us multiple resources. The most important being His Bible, and the Holy Spirit, which helps us to understand.  Secondarily, written works by theologians, scholars, and everyday people who devote themselves to the study, wisdom, and knowledge of God and His Word.

What About Other Books?

Some people have had teaching and much more study time than others to devote to God’s Word (or are spiritually gifted that way). From these people we can learn the history and culture of the people and places of Bibles times. Language, wording, and constancy have been studied at length. Threads and themes that lead through the whole Bible have been pored over in depth. Thankfully, the people who have spent hours on these things have written books to pass their findings along to us.

“8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”  (Philippians 4:8). Books that can encourage us in our Christian walk of faith and can deepen our understanding of God’s word are worth our time. God has given some people more time, softer hearts, or more intelligent brains to dig into some parts of the Bible and write about them. These resources are indispensable. Not as indispensable as the Bible itself, but oh so helpful, nonetheless. At The Study Room, we have collected a variety of works by people both ancient and modern to help to aid in the study of God’s Word.

How To Use The Study Room?

So, why The Study Room? Because we want you to be “Feeding your soul” (which happens to be our slogan).  “35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”  (John 6:35). Only Jesus can fully satisfy. At The Study Room, we are here so that you have easier access to a space and resources to aid you in your study of who God is through His Word.

We want people to have what they need to love the Lord God with all their heart, to learn, and then teach these things to people in their sphere of influence. We want people to live the life that God would have them to live and to bring honour and glory to Him. “9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”  (Colossians 1:9-14).

We look forward to sharing in your love of God’s Word, and  we pray that our space and resources to help make a difference in your life.
